Mysteries of the ancient world, the medieval town Žrnov, Serbia
On top of Avala, where he now is a monument of the Unknown Soldier, formerly located medieval fortress and the ancient city Žrnov. According to legend, the city was the seat of Porča of Avala. There are discovered remains of the Celtic culture and their settlement, the Romans were in the same place where their fort, whence are they control access *Singidunum, but also to protect their mines on the slopes of Avala.
Our ancestors are in this place, in the Middle Ages, built a fort. Later, in 1442. are is occupied the Ottomans, and then is further expanded since it was located on an important place for the defense, but is with the fall of Belgrade in 1521. Žrnov lost its strategic importance.
King of Yugoslavia Aleksandar Karadjordjevic in 1934. is decided to dynamite destroy this fort and in its place erect a monument to the Unknown Soldier, from famous Croatian author Ivan Mestrovic. Reasons for demolition have not been fully elucidated, and it remains unknown why is the Žrnov demolished and what is all contained under the walls of the city.
*Singidunum, name for the ancient city in Serbia which became Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. It was recorded that a Celtic tribe, the Scordisci, settled the area in the 3rd century BC following the Gallic invasion of the Balkans. The Roman Empire conquered the area in 75 BC and later garrisoned the Roman Legio IV Flavia Felix in 86 AD. It was the birthplace to the Roman Emperor Jovian. Belgrade has arisen from its ashes 38 times.
